We were in a fortunate position on our boat, already having a domestic battery bank consisting of 5 x 120 Ah 12 volt AGM batteries coupled to a Mastervolt combi 2500 watt pure sine wave inverter / 12v charger so adding a solar installation was relatively painless both mechanically and financially. We also have a Mastervolt shunt and monitoring system so we can see exactly what is going in to or out of the battery bank at any given time.

I wrote a blog post here which covers the installation in more detail but in essence, we have domestic size panels mounted on brackets which can be tilted towards the sun and which give clearance above other roof fittings.

The controller is an Epever / Epsolar BN4215 mppt unit.

Connected to this is the MT50 monitoring unit.
